the first thing I do as I set up the navigator is to silent it.. cant bear any voice let alone a Jamaican one ;)

How do you get the emergency announcements?

More than once I've been on a motorway, and knowing that I had a dozen junctions to go, didn't need to keep a visual check on the sat-nav - but I get a message - "Accident ahead /carriageway blocked / standing traffic, leave at the next exit - route being re-calculated."

Then there is the need to constantly take your eyes of the road to get the name of the next street in an unknown city.

You put the sat nav nearish the base of the windscreen in the middle of the steering wheel.

You then use the use the sat nav as your speedo and glance at it in the same way you would glance at your speedo.

I don't know anyone who has the sound on their sat nav.

If there's an accident ahead the gantries will have a reduced speed ahead.

Switch the traffic announcements on the radio on

I take it that you haven't driven much in the West Midlands ;)

Our speciality is direction information written on the road underneath the other cars so you can't ever see it except at 6AM on a Sunday in Summer.

Only "passing through" usually, and for that I just remember what the map said ;)

    I like my Satnav voice.

I used to love my MG Montego
"All monitored systems are working correctly" - so comforting

West Midlands must be similar to Aberdeen and Perth then.

A stranger to those cities, driving to the Highway Code advice on which lane to approach a roundabout or traffic lights is usually caught out as these cities have decided that some left lanes are 'turn left only' and some have the occasional right lane which is 'turn right only'.

Which lane to go straight ahead is only known by the locals as the arrows painted on the road are never visible due to queueing traffic in front.

Those same Aberdeen and Perth folks are caught out when they visit Glasgow or Dundee where the 'correct' lanes are completely different.

In strange cities both in UK and abroad the sat-nav voice is essential for me.

Try turning the voice off in Greece for instance where only the main road signs are in Latin script - the others are all Greek to me. LOL

Same in Bulgaria, Serbia, etc. etc.

Each to his/her own of course - I like my Australian 'co-pilot'.
