    You seem overly worried about your relative, it's great that you care and it seems she's in for a shock or might bury her head in the sand. All you can do is give her links to the local council website to help the penny drop.

    With regards to her contract with the landlord, you will find the Shelter website helpful to understand if/when a contract can be broken, how to prevent and deal with rent arrears.

    In general terms, a tenant cannot break a fixed term tenancy agreement but if its a year long contract,it might have a mid-term break clause for example. They can negotiate with the landlord to see if they would accept an early surrender. The landlord doesn't have to agree to an early release but might be persuaded that its the best option to prevent them experiencing arrears. A landlord can take the tenant to the small claims court for arrears and get a CCJ if the judgement is not paid, plus enforce the debt in other ways. This is just general info - you should review the Shelter website for exact info.

    Seems your relative has expectations of grandeur that are not backed up by capital wealth.

    I tend to agree with you here. I think there is a saying 'don't try to keep up with the Jones' rather bring them down to your level'! I don't think this was a good move at all - especially as her employment is precarious.
