pipe lagging - what is this...Hessian, asbestos, glass?

Not allowed to post links as a new users. I've got this pipe lagging which looks like a dark brown glassy wool, big fibres, kind of hairy. Will attempt to attach a picture or post a link in reply...

Got this around our house, central heating installed about 15 years ago we're told, though seems unlikely unless they recycled the lagging. Haven't mapped the plumbing out yet but it may just be on the water pipes rather than heating (which in places uninsured)

I've seen this in other old houses but can't find similar stuff when googling for Hessian, asbestos, rock wool, glass fibre... can anyone tell me what it is? Another post suggested hair or cloth. I just want to know if it's safe to remove! Doesn't look very effective.

    Does it look like this?

    It's called Felt pipe insulation
  • It sounds like ***this*** kind of stuff. I used some to insulate some central heating pipes over the top of the foil/bubble wrap type insulation and it fit very neatly. Took hours to fit though.

  • Hi, yes thanks most of it does look like that. Some looks a bit coarser and one or 2 bits have a black rubbery outer backing but looks like the same inside(without poking it). I just couldn't find any pictures of the felt stuff after it's had a while to degrade a bit. (Still can't post links)

So is this stuff any good/dangerous/worth working around or replacing?

I don't think it's dangerous, I've removed plenty and never had any problems.

I have no idea how good it is but most places sell the gray foam insulation for pipes now days so I assume that is better.
  • you can buy felt lagging in any plumbers merchant so no it's not dangerious
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

;) Like with all lagging, efficiency is determine by the density, depth and standard of installation :)
