Another idea is to delete your card details from any internet sites you may have saved them on. It is so easy just to click a mouse, less easy if you have to go and find your card. Personally I would cut them up. If your husband is as money savvy as you say then will he notice your change in spending habits or were your purchases hidden?

  • Hi and thanks for all your replies.
I have my loan with first direct on my internet banking site along with my current account and savings account with the facility to make a payment from any of my accounts whenever I want.

My OH probably wont notice too much. He has his money and I have mine. He saves each month and I have started giving him some to save for me each month for when I need to buy xmas presents have holiday spending money etc.
I agree that having things you don't share in a marriage is deceitful but as I have said previously at this moment in time it isn't agood idea I share this with him. He would feel obliged to take control and It is my debt. I need to sort it.

When I am nearer to paying it off I may tell him then.

The idea about cancelling the automatically saved debit card numbers on shopping sites is good and I will be doing that. I have enough toiletries and makeup to last the next 6 mths at least apart from the odd essential so there'll be non of that anymore:T
I know I have a long way to go but I have taken the first steps already and intend to post monthly updates of how I've: done:T

  • Shopping is a total hobby! It really is!

I just wanted to say, when I first came on here I paid off around 25 grand and no one in real life knew anything. It was a bit tough but I got very good at finding deals and collecting vouchers/points to buy things. I paid it off in June 2011.

Unfortunately I got into debt again to the tune of around 7000, got it down to 4400 but had to get a new car and have had to put the 650 car insurance on the cc.

However, this time people know (as it was a relatively small amount borrowed for clear reasons) and ironically because people are so nice and understanding I am finding it much harder this time to grasp the seriousness of my situation - job finishes in five months and I am no where near being out of debt! when I really should be.

It is possible to do it, to pay it off. You can do this and you really shouldn't be ashamed. You are doing something about it.

Ive sold some things on ebay before but the were large items like a car I once had but I'm a member and everything so maybe that is the way to go.

Another thing I can cut back on is toiletries:D and make up!!! I could use everything I've got put some on ebay and go for the more reasonable priced stuff apart from a few items that I'm not prepared to do without !!!!

This is turning into a bit of a project now!!!!:T

tee-hee, you sound like most women I know, including myself. My stash of make up, skin creams, hair products etc fill 2 drawers and half the airing cupboard. My aim for this year is to use up this hoard before I buy any more, and then to be a bit more choosy when I do buy.

Keep plodding on and reporting your progress on here so we can all support you.
  • :rotfl:Hoard is the correct description!! I think the only thing I will need to get in the next few months is a mascara and this time it wont be Est!e Lauder or Dior!! Rimmel will do the trick i think.

  • One last thought for the day. I will be buying all my pet food, toilet rolls and other household stuff in bulk from Costco if you've heard of it. Admittedly it costs a chunk to buy at first but over a two month period the shopping bill is reduced. OH worked out ages ago we could save 200-300 a year by doing this.

The only expensive food I will keep buying is for my pedigree longhaired indoor cat. The food is 25.00 and the last bag has actually lasted since before xmas so its actually cheaper in the long run than kit e kat!!

Lidl and Aldi are cheaper for toilet and kitchen rolls. I didn't bother renewing my Costco membership as it's too good at luring you into thinking that buying in bulk is money saving. Shopping around and dropping down from "premium" brands to economy brands is cheapest. Lidl's Aloe Vera toilet rolls are, in my opinion, way better than the brand leaders - and don't disintegrate.
What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?

Good luck :) My DH knows I have debt but he doesn't know how much. I ran them up, I want to clear them. Everything else is joint, this isn't.

  • He knows I have credit cards and catalogue but doesn't know how much. He would probably pack his bags and leave me and at the moment I think- who can blame him.:eek:

Anyway at the moment there no way I'm telling anyone other than on here. It makes me feel sick when I think about it and I cant sleep at times. I feel better know I can speak to people on here in the same boat and I have a plan. Sat up late last night working out a plan of attack. Ive been off work sick last week as my back went and thats not helping:mad:

Anyway I'm going to put a monthly financial report on here starting at the end of feb and keep doing so until im debt free......
I may be here for some time ..;)

Regards your make up, clothes n stuff. We've been having a declutter in our home, we plan to be ruthless and tackle the whole house. Anyway my point was that so far I have found toiletries and make up which I didn't remember having and it will last for months. My wardrobe was full of items I no longer wore but a few things I've kept and with a bit of mixing old with the new I have a few more outfits. So look for what you already have and pay a bit extra off your debt.

Soap & Glory collagen mascara is a good substitute, £10 and often on 3 for 2.
