Council Tax Benefit overpayment - repayment

Hi,
I have asked this question before... but now i have spoken to the council tax office... I have more info.
I think (cant tell for sure until the accountant dose my books) I will need to pay back council tax benefit this year...
How ever when i am asked to pay it back (next financial year) our income vs out goings will probably be in a negative situation... unless I secure more work by then... ( fingers crossed ).
So my question is...
If I am over paid Council Tax benefit this year... but do not have sufficient monthly income to pay it back next year (financial year) how to the council tax work out my repayments... will it simple go on pause until we have more money coming in again?
Any help will be appreciated.

Usually, they want if repaid, even if it's from benefits etc,, (your post isn't clear as to what you will be living on, if no work forthcoming).
Obviously, though, they will have to apply a reasonable repayment schedule, if your income is very low.
You will need to discuss it with them, when you are certain as to your position.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.

Hi Lin...
Thanks for reply...
We would be living off tax credits and help from family... whilst both looking for more work...
I am self employed and although I have done ok this year my line of work dose not have repeat business.
Hence trying to plan for the future... well two months away.
Our income maybe short £400 a month, parents will step in and help us (loan) till I/we secure more work (new business).
So I just wondered how the council tax department will handle it... Happy to pay any money back... but might not be able to pay it back straight away... if that makes sense...0 -
You could certainly request a delay in repayment, but councils tend to be a bit rigid, at times.
I would wait until you know what the finances will be, and talk it over with them.
Also, if needed, make sure you are claiming anything you can, by going into the "Turn2us" website and putting all your figures in.

Thanks... yes that was what worried me... council not being flexible...0

My one isn't flexible about anything, but different councils might take another view!

You could contact one of the debt charities for advice.0

Hi,
I have recently had an overpayment of housing benefit (approx£700) due to recent bereavement. I received a letter informing me that the overpayment would be deducted from my future housing benefit at £10 per week. I visited the council office and they were very helpful and gave me an income and expenditure form to complete and told me to make an offer of payment that was more manageable if i needed to.
Maybe different councils have a different approach but mine were very helpful so its worth a call or paying them a visit.0
