Pet friendly, disability accesible surfing spots in the UK

Hi all,

Long time lurker, thought I'd consult the masses as some people might have a better idea than me on this.

I'm taking my mum away on holiday this year, she has MS so may be fine or may need her wheelchair and I'd rather prepare for the wheelchair scenario. It's her first holiday in about 5 years so I want to take her to a really nice sandy beach.

We're also taking her border collie and my surf loving husband, along with my brother and sister.

I can find lots of dog friendly accomodation but most of it isn't near a dog friendly sandy beach.

I've kind of narrowed my search down to a few places in north and south wales and summerleaze beach in Bude, but wanted to check I'm not missing a trick.

So to summarise, I'm looking for pet friendly, wheelchair accesible accomodation for 5 adults + dog, with a sandy, dog friendly beach nearby (pref walking distance) and maybe some attractions in the area for around a thousand pounds.

It's a high order, but if anyone can help me I'd be very grateful!

  • Oh and I forgot to say we live close to London so any travel up to about 4-5 hours would be fab.

How about Cornwall, St Ives is beautiful and very dog friendly, we also have a brilliant surfing beach called Porthmeor, a Tate gallery which has wheelchair access and a restaurant on top where you could watch the hubby surf.
All the town is dog friendly and they are also allowed on the beaches at this time of year up until easter, where they are only allowed on before 8am and after 7pm, but there is also a nominated doggie beach and lots of coastal path and country walks. let me know if you need any help if you fancy St Ives and I can get you some links.

  • Thanks for the info, it'd definitely be nice not to have to lock the dog away somewhere to eat and stuff so dog friendly pubs etc would be great.

I'm hoping to go the last week of July or first two weeks of August - mum and I also work in schools just to make the whole situation harder!

Widemouth Bay,just south of Bude.Fantastic surfing and dog friendly all year round on the south side.Huge beach, even on the busiest days it never seems crowded.

I have a holiday home there and get down in 3 and half hours from Birmingham, that includes a good stop off with my dog.

Almost everywhere in the area is dog friendly.

Thats a big ask & be aware that wheelchair friendly can mean many things to different people. The Llyn Peninsular is famous for surfing around Abersoch and whistling sands is great . Further up is Dinas Dinlle not as choppy and the dog walking end is stoney on the beach but there is a concrete walkway along the top of the beach and parking in the dips behind (other end is sandy but no dogs and a walk from parking .

  • Bude looks really good actually, definitely researching more into there!

I know its a big ask, ive found some options with some compromises but wanted to check that the MSE community didnt know of an ideal place..

I've also had a few PMs to look through; I appreciate everyone who's popped on with ideas :)

I would say Widemouth as well! They have just installed a wheelchair ramp down to the beach (near the lifeguard tower) last summer which my mother used.
Check on the dog restrictions as I can't remember what they are in the summer months - I think you just need to keep them on a lead between 10am and 6pm from May to September.
Black Rock beach, which is next to the main beach has no dog restrictions.

The whole Bude/North Cornwall is well worth a visit as so much to do and see.
  • Another vote for Bude here (im a disabled dog lover) and there is the most amazing pasty shopin the centre of bude too (dogs not allowed in the shop though ...but there is a dog friendly cafe.

I have also had holidays at dinas Dinlle but think Bude is miles better.

We use hoseasons or holiday cottages.co.uk when trying to locate a pet friendly accesible cottage
