Stopping a building society cheque

  • Firstly, the chap at the PO advised that I shouldn't send it 'To Be Signed For' as generally there is no one to receive it at the other end, so to speak. In hindsight, a bad move!

Anyway, have managed to see Bank manager and they are able to cancel the cheque but are unable to recredit the account unless the DSA froward a letter stating "It won't be presented in the future" should it ever arrive? The DSA at the moment are not prepared to do this so I am just awaiting their decision.

Post again when I know more,

Did you ask them to issue a duplicate cheque, as I suggested above?

  • All I can say is that you should start a formal complaint to them.
It is ridiculous that you will get a refund if you get this confirmation that they ask for but as I said before cheques get lost in the post all the time - surely the process for stopping a cheque is the same whether you have this letter or not.
I would also consider opening an account with a proper bank where stopping a cheque does not give you this grief.

I agree that this is a load of tosh - tell them you want your £300 now they've stopped the cheque.

One thing which may help is writing to the DSA as this will make them respond with their position in writing. This will provide written proof of their position for both the BS and FOS complaints

Also, ditch the BS when they fix this.

    Right. Just an update.

The building society have agreed to stop the cheque, and refund my wife's money, providing I receive a letter from the DSA stating "they will not present the cheque for payment" should it arrive in the future, and that I wait the statutory 15 working days, in case it still arrives by Royal Mail.

    I won't hold my breath........!

In the meantime I have started a claim for loss of mail through Royal Mail. They have offered me 6 First Class stamps in relation to this. What a joke. Do they think I'm going to send anything by post again? Not a chance........?????
  • I do feel a little like a broken record here, but I'll ask the question once more.

Why has the building society not simply produced a duplicate cheque to replace the one that has been lost and stopped? I ask because I know that's what my building society (not West Brom) do as a matter of course.

Have you asked them to do this?

No, and I'm not even the OP.

Just seems to me that the OP could have saved himself a lot of hassle by asking the building society to do this in the first place.

All this faffing about with getting the DSA to provide a letter is a side-issue.

Building society counter cheques are weird beasts; they're drawn on the society's own account so the society can be liable if it stops a cheque and the original payee goes ahead and presents it. But if you ask them to provide a duplicate made out to the same payee, everyone's happy.

I can't see why this option hasn't been suggested by the West Brom (or asked for by the OP).

    Right. Just an update.

Received a phone call yesterday (Monday 17th January) from the DSA and they confirm that the cheque and application finally turned up at their Newcastle offices on 7th March and they are attempting to cash it.

Cannot believe it, after all the telephone calls, and correspondence from the DSA themselves confirming they would not do this. And of course the leading question - Where the hell as it been since 28th January?

Royal Mail is an absolute joke! Got 6 first class stamps from them as compensation ready to use, and anticipate to loose six more letters in due course! Maybe I'll give these to someone else so that they can have the headaches!

I suspect the 17th January in the above post should read 17th March.
