Can I stain/varnish mexican pine?

We have a set of mexican pine bedroom furniture. It's unvarnished or unfinished or something. You certainly can't clean it with furniture polish, it wouldn't spread.
Anyway I don't want to replace it as it's decent but I don't like the colour with our other furniture. I also would prefer a smooth finish. Is it possible to stain and or varnish it?
What would the required steps be? Sanding?
Thank you

give it a light sand down with some very fine sandpaper , and then stain in your desired colour , or if you are feeling brave , use a wood dye and then give it a coat of wax furniture polish0

You could try a combined stain/varnish?.0

Ill definitely have a look at the products since it seems doable, I will test an area that would be against a wall first I think

wax will give you a really nice finish , you can get a sealer to pre treat the wood , then give that a light sand down and then give it a couple of wax's and the world's your lobster0
