Sorry to hear about that. Must have been very scary to be confronted like that.
As much as he may not want to I'd suggest buying a cheap bike, maybe second hand as his bike will be less appealing then. I'm sure he could upgrade certain aspects of the bike whilst keepng the bike looking "cheap". Also to have so many thefts so close together are you sure he isn't being deliberatly targeted by someone?
