Hi, I wonder if I can get some advice basically my son had a 6 year award for dla which ran out on the 28th jan 14 the day before his 16th birthday, prior to this we had a Letter saying they will continue paying his dla until he has a decision on his pip.

When I called in the week the dla informed me they will keep payi g his dla until he can apply for pip as where we live it has not been introduced to our region yet.

So am I right in thinking that although the dla award was due to end, as he has to apply for pip and cannot yet through no fault of his own as it is not in our region yet, the dla will continue until he is invited to apply for pip?

Sorry for the long post but we are rather confused about it all.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.
:)

If that's what they have said then that's ok but I would double check just to be sure.

One thing at 16 depending on the disability and many parent's are not aware if the young person is in a Special School, you can apply for ESA. It means you loose Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits but in some cases it can be a advantageous, particularly if the CTC is low.

I think with the DLA they will have to renew until PIP comes on board in your area, I would ask them to renew on that basis.

Hiya, yes this is correct. I have a son who is 16 in April and on HRC and HRM, indefinite awards. He attends a special school and will transfer to another special school in September (his currrent school only caters for those up to 16). Before Christmas, I received a letter about him managing his own money or having an appointee if he is unable. I replied that he needs an appointee (myself) and gave the reasons why. The letter also said that my son's DLA would be paid at the current rates until a decision was made about PIP.

A couple of weeks ago we had a DWP representative visit to check, and she agreed that he does need an appointee - being able to make 10p in pennies, but no more, and not understanding that ten pennies is the same a a ten pence piece shows my son's complete lack of understanding of money.

Between the letter and the visit, I received a letter from Motability telling me that it is time to order a new car. I rang them and explained that I couldn't order one as I was expecting the PIP forms through, and that as my son is 16 on his next birthday, he would be transferred over. The lady at Motability asked if I wanted her to enquire when the forms would be sent out, so I agreed.

To cut a long story short, there is a backlog with PIP (which I was aware of), and all awards for children turning 16 have been delayed. They will continue to receive DLA at their current rates until assessment takes place. If a definitive date had previously been given, those assessments will take place in a few months time. For my son, as he has an indefinite award for both care and mobility, it will be at least a year, possibly longer, before his transfer to PIP takes place.

I rang the DWP myself to check this, and they confirmed it. They told me to go ahead and order a new car (the current car lease could be extended for up to six months, but my son's award will not be looked at for at least a year).

Yesterday I received the annual award letter showing HRC and HRM rates from April, and stating that he has an indefinite award.

PIP has not yet been introduced to our region, but the lady from the DWP told me that no young people turning 16 are having their awards looked at just yet, due to a delay in introducing PIP.
  • Thank you for all your replies, and many thanks KingfisherBlue for explaining it.

I just assumed once my son was 16 he applied straight away for pip, but I have read there is a big backlog at the moment so at least it is a bit of breathing space before the dreaded forms arrive.

    Thank you all again.

Yes that is what seems to be happening. Because I complained about the delays the DWP have extended one of my time limited awards by 6 months!

Ironically, I doubt very much that it will be renewed so this has given me another 6 months of money at the rate of just over £60 a week!!
