Well, at least you have recognised risk and the potential for significant losses, so they won't come as a surprise - unless your eighth word was a typo...

Both my ISA account and SIPP account were grateful that I speculated on the RM float ;)

There are of course some situations where the odds appear to be a bit more in your favour and it feels somewhat less of a gamble. So all the OP needs is to find a new IPO where every single newspaper and opposition MP is shouting from the rooftops that the shares are being deliberately given away for a song.

Did you get two lots then?

I certainly did. A chunk for my SIPP and for my ISA -- though I had to wait until they went on open sale, so I missed the 330p. I think i bought for 480p. Still a good profit so far.

Yes. A gamble at good odds that comes good quickly is not investing.

A friend of mine told me investing was easy - you buy the shares, when they have gone up a lot sell them but if they don't go up, don't buy them - simples!

Yes, I'm obviously playing devils advocate but what is the definition of a good investment?

I'm not sure that longevity has a lot to do with it, more a question of minimising risk and maximising return.

One thing I think that is wrong currently is the removal of taper relief from capital gains tax calculation. As well as being a good thing to promote longer term thinking and ideally shareholder engagement for example, it's surely a logical thing to compare any gains in relation to inflation if held over the longer term as sensible investing often should be.

As nobody knows what will happen to shares in the future they can't advise which ones are going to be the winners.

And this is where I come in. If you all invest in my time machine company we can go into the future and actually SEE the winners...
