Why is a 1.6 only getting 32mpg on a motorway? Is there a lot of traffic on your route?

My friend has a Volvo C30 1.6D eDrive with Stop / Start (which she doesn't use) and she gets 60+mpg without trying.
But has others have pointed out, Diesel is more expensive and the cars are more expensive to buy, service etc. so do all the maths.0 -

Perhaps due to the fact at 150k miles it's not at it's best? and tbh that's a fair mpg for that type of car.0 -

I'm sorry but I'm confused. OK so 150k may affect the car but why would it be a fair mileage for that car in general. Most 1.6's I have owned (including a Focus) are low to mid 40's on motorway runs.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. What we don't know is the driving style, I had a MK5 GTI and if I were to drive it like a 1.4 then high 40s to very low 50s were possible, realistically on a run mid 30s high 40s, but as the OP quotes 80miles/day which suggests 40 miles each way and it's fair to assume he does not live on the motorway junction and the office as at the junction. I had use of a TT diesel for 2 weeks, driving the same routes and style I was getting overall 45mpg vs about 36mpg for my current car, diesels will return more yes that's a given, he can expect in real terms 25-30% more MPG for the same journeys and style and even if you double the mpg the outlay (including the cash off the current car) will take a few years to show a return, in fact it probably won't show a return, however money sitting in the bank when he can treat himself to some newer wheels, I would not deny anybody that.0 -

A Polo is in the supermini range a Focus is a mid sized hatchback, really has to compare like with like, and being honest the 1.4 Polo is not going to cruise the same a 1.6 petrol Focus.0 -

The focus should certainly be doing a little more MPG than 32 to be fair. I have a 158,000 mile 2.3 petrol turbo Volvo Estate and that will do 30mpg on a steady motorway run, so I would hope the focus, with its smaller engine and less weight would do more than 32! but I agree driving style comes into it.
And I will say again, you really have to do all the sums. If you are getting a Polo Bluemotion or Peugeot 208, Will you be dealer servicing it? if so, that will be more expensive than £50 in parts and an hours labour at an indy for servicing.
The Focus is one of the most popular cars on the road and can be run on very little money. The savings you make on having a modern diesel car can be wiped out in one big DMF / EGR related bill if your not careful.
I reckon if you sit down and work everything out, including insurance, tax, MOTs, servicing, potential repair costs and fuel consumption, you won't be saving much.0 -
The mpg the OP gets will of course depend how fast they drive...0

a saving only works if you swop or sell your old car for the more economical car , beyond this its just numbers that can be argued over
cant advise as i wouldnt have a clue on your requirements , any smallish modernish diesel will do 50mpg if you drive correctly and 35 if you dont , at a guess and assuming your focus isnt a million years old and battered id buy a merc 220 diesel but then were all different0
