Kitchen Window opening in to conservatory

Hi Guys,

We are planning to have our conservatory cover the fullwidth of the house which means that the kitchen window will then open inconservatory. Although my Mrs. seems to think this is alright, I can’t helpbeing concerned.
Is this normal?
I don’t have the budget to do any other changes to existingkitchen layout.
Just to be clear it will only be the window which will openin kitchen, the exhaust vent will be relocated to open outside.
Any pros/cons will be helpful.
thanks

  • I've seen it done a number of times when people have gone right across the back of the house. About 10 years ago the P shaped conservatories were all the rage round our way and everyone had a kitchen window opening into one. No one I know seemed to have a problem with it.

The only thing I would say having had an conservatory on my last home is to consider a proper extension from the start.
  • If you open your kitchen window in winter to get rid of steam/moisture when you cook, you'll end up with more condensation than usual in the conservatory. A kitchen extract is not always up to the task by itself. But if you do not open the window at the moment, then probably won't be an issue for you.

If you open your kitchen window in summer to get rid of excess heat, you may find it doesn't work anymore because the conservatory is even hotter. Depends on the orientation of the conservatory, and having sufficient opening windows and blinds in the conservatory may reduce this issue.

I can't personally think of any benefits of having a conservatory...

we've bought a house with the layout as you describe: A big conserv across the back of the house. It is very cold in there atm and it doesn't get much use apart from storage.

We will probably replace with an extension and make a big open plan kitchen / lounge / diner next year if/when we can afford it and we've done all the other stuff jobs first!
  • We have a stable door in kitchen as well so that acts as a window to outside too.
I would prefer extension too but can't afford and can't be bothered with building regs etc. Got twins on their way so Mrs is getting paranoid about space. I keep telling her we have plenty room but guess her nesting instincts are taking over.

Ours was done a long time ago and goes over the back window but I have another kitchen window on other outside wall so doesn't matter too much.
Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T
  • Yes I was thinking it can be used as a serving hatch.
