Magazine subscriptions.

My children's godmother bought them a subscription to National Geographic Kids magazine for Christmas. The children like the magazine,not least because it comes with "freebies" every month - small toys, sweets etc.

However, the subscription issues don't include the covermounts (as these gifts are called).

I emailed the magazine to ask why, but also to ask them where this is made clear on the subscription description or T's&C's.

They responded that various companies request these freebies to be included on copies that go to particular retailers, but they can't include them on the subscription copies.
However, they did not answer my question of where this was made clear. My point to them was that children may ask for the subscription based on their experience of buying the magazine instore, and also that claiming buying the subscription is a way of saving money seems unfair if they don't make it clear that you don't actually get the same content as in store.

So, my question is - do magazines have to make it clear that subscription copies do not include any free gifts?

What did the terms of the subscription says?
I would suspect it just refers to the magazine.
