Argos promised compensation for order error. Now refuse?

In December 2013 I ordered my daughter a christmas present.
It arrived but was the wrong item and on initially placing the order it said the site was too busy so I never had any order confirmation.
Al together the order was £15.00.
When I contacted argos about this they told me that they'd investigate. They said in the end the error had been caused because the did not have the stock in their warehouse so they would reserve it for me to pick up. My nearest store was 15 miles from me so it was quite a journey.
Obviously I explained to Argos that when i placed the order, surely there system should check if its in stock or not and having to travel almost a month after christmas (due to their response time) was abit unacceptable as I had to take time off work to wait for the present and also travel there.
They told me that they would reimburse me if I sent in a payslip from my employer and reciepts of any petrol costs, as it was their error.
I therefore emailed them my payslips from a scanner.
I recieved a response stating that they couldn't see the image so I sent them a URL. I then recieved a phone call the following Sunday stating that they wanted to know when I would send the payslip.
I sent it in again and two weeks later I got a response from them saying that I now needed to send it in in physical format.
When I did write to them i didn't ask for my petrol costs back, my printing costs or the postage cost and simply the time i had to take off work to wait for the delievery which was equivalent to £50.00
They wrote back to me and said they would refund the whole order of £15.00 plus any delivery charges but for them to reimburse me £50.00 was ill logical because it was higher than the order, so they would not do this.
I've since tweeted argos in complaint and they told me if am unhappy to re-write to them.
I wanted to know..surely as I have a email confirming they will compensate me is there no consumer laws to state that they have to keep to this?

Did you actually lose money or suffer loss by not going into work?
Have a look here for Martin's guide: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/delivery-rights
You may have to threaten them with court (or even do it) if they refuse to play ball but the fact they have asked you for evidence of what you earn does intimate (in my opinion) that they were willing to consider it.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
I lost 1 days earning..0

I read it that the days wages they're claiming was for the original delivery date. Which OP wont be able to claim for as they would have lost that day whether the right item was delivered or not.
Their actual losses are the petrol costs. However from what OP has written, it sounds like they may have compensated them for that with refunding the total price paid for the item (unless OP was charged twice and only refunded for the one that was to be delivered?).You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
