Motability Car Extras

Hi im looking for a bit of advice im looking to change my motability car and have decided to go for the new mini hatchback which comes out in march.
We have decided on the model which we want which has got a advanced payment of £950.
We also want quite a few extras which also add upto £1220.
When i was in the showroom looking around i had a quick chat with a sales person and asked if they are able to offer a deal on the extras and he said that they dont earn any commission on the extras so cant offer any discount.
I just wanted to know if this is true before i place my order so that i can better haggle if i know if they do earn commission.

Not on Motability I don't think.

The 'dealer' is essentially motability, they agree the price with the manufacturer rather than you haggling with them. Therefore anything extra is up to you.

The dealer you've been speaking with is more of a distributor in this case. Does that make sense?
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

True to some extent but the dealer makes a fortune on the extras and should offer you a discount.
We have always haggled the price of 'extras' and in the case of Ford we have been more than satisfied.
Chose a Volkswagen recently and went to 4 dealerships before we got the right discount.

There is certainly margin (as well as all the juicy tow-ins and servicing) for Dealers in the scheme and they can give discount. No harm in pushing, but they do tend to stick to their guns on the slightly monopolised position they hold.

If you know what you want, phone a few other dealers and see if they will offer you an discount (or even throw one of the extras in for free) and if so then go back to your dealers (the closest I'm guessing) and tell them to match it or you'll it from the other dealer.....

You could also find a different make of car (ie a Ford / Vauxhall) that you like (granted not as much as the mini) and get a price with any extras and try and use that as a bargining point with the mini dealer.

The other option which a friend has used, is to find a car that is either Nil or Low Deposit but is high spec and is regarded more of a premium brand and use that as a haggling point.

So a quick look on the Motability site I see the like of:-

    V40 D2 115hp Cross Country LUX - £399
    V40 D2 115hp Cross Country LUX Powershift (Auto) - £499

But also look at the likes of BMW, Audi etc and find there high spec models with a low deposit.

I think it would be a harder haggle then my above post, but my mate says it works for him; I guess the idea is to show you can get higher spec., from a premium brand for less...
  • Thanks for all the advice. Im going to have a ring around today to see if i can get any of the other dealers to offer a small discount.
    Cheers

    I've been Money Tipped!
I drive a Mini and am not sure how mobility friendly it is to be honest. I love my car but couldn't get anything too big in the back. Even a walking stick knocks about a bit.
