does anyone else do this ?

Many years ago when I first left home I was on a gas and leccy meter so learnt early to be frugal - we put frozen veg or tinned veg or beans into casserole dish in the oven if we were cooking anything in there for dinner rather that lighting the hob.

Still do that and tonight put baked beans with a handfull of frozen sliced peppers into them and popped in to the oven as the oven chips and sausages cooked in there too.

I don't do it often but if there's an option of oven or hob cooking I go for the oven every time. It's not so much being frugal for me but that I don't need to stand over it while it's cooking.
  • I did it once and OH looked at me as though I'd just sprouted an extra head! And he claimed the beans "tasted funny". Sigh.

More frugal to plan and take out frozen stuff to defrost first, takes less time to cook then.

what frozen veg and baked beans ? cannot see difference if already baking something in oven i.e. frozen oven chips, roast tatties, pies, frozen sausages ............

  • I always do that, got set of enamel dishes so any baked beans, veggies, re-heated stuff (e.g. potatoes in water) etc go in those and on bottom shelf of oven whilst whatever I'm cooking on top shelf heats up. Another one whose mom used to do this!

:) Yup, I do this. I have some diddly little Pyrex casseroles which do nicely for small amounts of beans or veggies. Seems commonsensical to me to use the oven if you have it on, anyway.

I lived in a bedsit for 3 years with an electric cooker attached to its own 10p meter (this was the 1980s) which concentrated the mind wonderfully on the correlation between cooking habits and cost.

I also make extensive use of a multi-tiered stainless steel pan on the hob and have even been known to use the nigh-boiling water drained from it to sluice some soda crystals down the sink, rather than boiling water especially for that purpose.

If I'm cooking in the oven, then yes, I always do this - tbh, I think I assumed that most people would do this anyway.

I put the root veg into small casserole dishes topped up with hot water.

My mother always did that with the water from boiling eggs!

Just out of curiosity, I've noticed 'mom' becoming more common in posts. I'd talk about my mother or mam or even mammy as a small child. Similarly mum and mummy. Do the posters who talk about 'mom' actually use the word within the family?

My mother always used to stand the opened tin of peas in the bottom of the oven, where it wouldn't get knocked over, when heating say, a pie to eat them with. Saves on the washing up too ;)
Now that was our idea of fast food! :)
