Beware - changes in parking regulations in University Area

  • The thing is this is all a question of who is being inconvenienced. People who drive in and park find it less convenient to use the park and ride facilities or to go go to a further away or paid for car park. People who live in the centre of Belfast find it inconvenient being unable to park within a ten minute walk of home. I guess it's a question of whose rights you think take precedence. But I really don't buy the argument that people will stop coming to Belfast because some small residential areas in the city move to residents parking :) either you have business there or you don't. From my POV if this discourages some cars from coming into the city, so much the better.

What is the difference in someone feeling that they should be able to get parked at the door of the place they are going to work and people who think that they should be able to get to park outside their house?

I think you'll find I never said anyone had that right. :rotfl:

I lived in a terraced street for 10 years and often couldn't get parked at my door because of neighbours parking multiple cars and had to suck it up. Now I have the luxury of my own driveway which I paid for. :T

If you can walk then find a car park and walk from it - factor in the parking cost as a business overhead. If your business can't sustain it then I'd question if it is really a viable business.

OK, I have that, but you are missing that the whole thing is hassle. A non-business person (or at least one who isn't paying the bills from their own pocket) may not appreciate this but hassle is the sort of thing which makes you take your business elsewhere. If you think that is an acceptable outcome then there is no point to discuss here. If you think that it is a problem for Belfast, then the matter of parking should not be dismissed so quickly.
    Always overestimating...
  • I think the BIG issue here is lack of planning at a wider, combined agency, city wide level... As Old Git says, if true, why was Bradbury centre allowed to be developed with only 12 parking spaces? Why was the Gas Works developed with pretty much no parking provision. It relies on the car parks across the road from it but what happens when that area is built on??.... more chaos.. Queens have a car park but why would they not build it 3 stories? they could easily have built it that high with no real impact on the surrounding area if built to a similar building design.. if these areas are going to be developed, they should be made consider parking requirements..

I don't live in the Holylands, but I do walk and cycle through it fairly often. Parking seems to be getting more and more scarce, because more and more students own cars. How the heck can they afford to run cars?? I hardly had enough dosh for essentials (alcohol :D) as a student, never mind a car!

In addition, why do they even need them if they're living near the university?

I completely agree with any measures that make non-essential car use in urban areas less attractive, btw. We need to encourage people to walk and cycle more.

The problem is... there are now more and more students living "at home" with mummy & daddy and commuting in instead... It's cheaper to run the car (which they usually all have anyway) than pay for the accommodation. (which in a lot of occasions is dire!!) especially the case with those who only live under 30 or 40 miles away

Well, the little darlings will just have to park further away and walk :)

On a side note, I really pity anyone who lives at home while at university. Moving out of home is an integral part of the experience imho :D

Never did me any harm. Then again I did spend two years in Madrid in between years 2 and 3 so perhaps that compensated.
