Galaxy S2 contacts not syncing with Google

I've got a Galaxy S2 phone on the T-mobile network and I've got my contacts stored on my phone. I've also got a gmail account. I was under the impression that they would sync automatically but my contacts from my phone aren't showing in my g-mail contacts list.
I've tried looking under settings and syncing the phone but I can't see anything.
Does anyone know what I'm missing?

Settings / Accounts / Sync .. Choose the Gmail account.

How do I check if they're saved as Google contacts. Sorry I know it's probably a dumb question I'm just not very good with techie stuff.0
