How much to charge for private tuition?

I'm sure I've seen threads on this before but I can't find them - so feel free to point me in the right direction rather than answer personally.
I've been asked to tutor a friends daughter (A level English lit) for an hour a week. She's willing to pay but wants me to tell her how much.
I have an Eng Lit degree and a PGCE (primary) but no specific A level experience apart from taking them myself! I'd really like to get involved in more tutoring in the future though as it's nice to be using my brain again (I'm a SAHM at the moment).
A quick google suggests £30 an hour which seems outrageous to me! What would you charge or indeed pay?

I think £30 is a bit much bearing in mind you're not experienced in teaching A level. For a friend I'd probably charge £20 plus any expenses.

Well, at the moment I pay a French tutor £20 per hour (GCSE level) and a piano teacher £18 for half an hour. I agree that £30 seems very high for someone who is not a qualified teacher. It does depend slightly on where in the UK you are - I imagine fees in London are probably higher than elsewhere. I'd say around £20 is probably more reasonable.0

My niece has been struggling with her GSCE maths - my sister pays £25 an hour for private tuition.0

For someone who has proven success of getting the results we pay £30, although I understand she has always charged this amount, so it is likely when she started off she had little track record.
So I would say it is reasonable.
If you feel it is too expensive, perhaps £25?0 -
Remember that whilst this is the "hourly rate" the reality is that you are also going to be spending time travelling getting there and back which is unpaid so the true rate per hour of effort is going to be less.
Further, if you were doing this more full time then you'd also have all the time and effort in banking, chasing payment, finding new clients, record keeping etc all of which is unbilled hours so both pulls down the true hourly rate and also reduces the number of hours you can actually be out there earning0 -
I am a private music teacher and charge between £13 (for half an hour) and £20 (an hour), depending on how far I have to travel. I'm one of the cheapest private teachers I know!0

Are you planning to do any other tutoring to make some cash, or are you doing it because it's a friend. If the latter, I wouldn't charge anything (although you shouldn't be out of pocket either). Is there any way your friend can help you out to reciprocate?. . .I did not speak out
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

My brother charges about £17 for GCSE and £20 an hour for A Level. He has a masters in physics, did the A Levels for what he tutors and works as a management accountant now. We live in the south (Essex) and his rate is competitive enough for him to have all the work he wants.0
