Orangery or conservatory? Terraced house

I am thinking of having either a conservatory or an orangery in my house but can't figure out which will be better/cheaper option.
Mine is a terraced house. There are neighbors' gardens on both sides. Can I build one with full width? Checked with local council they said I need to apply for planning permission (for either) as my road is not exempt from planning permission.
I am planning a 5 m (width) x 2.5 m (projection) conservatory/orangery.
My garden is south facing. I prefer a something which I can use all year round.

Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

IMHO, orangeries look better. I believe conservatories work out (on average) cheaper but of course, it depends entirely on the size and spec of either optionI have a simple philosophy:
Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches.

If you are south facing, you may have trouble controlling heat gain in a conservatory. Hard to believe in the present weather conditions, but even in January there are days when we open up the doors to our conservatory to benefit from the solar gain.
Ours will be demolished in a year or so and replaced by something more useful on the south side.0 -
We wanted an Orangery and got a number of quotes. Orangery's seem to carry a huge premium over a conservatory and on reflection we decided that it wasn't really worth it for us.
We ended up with a half way house option with a lot of brick down one side and brick pillars forming the corners at the end. This gives it a very Orangery feel but with a traditional conservatory roof which we feel actually let's in more light than an Orangery one.0 -

i think from what you describe we have something similar...and possibly for the same reasons...
When we got quotes for an orangery they were far more expensive just because of what they were....having a consevatory roof also alloed us to get more light in...if we had gone for the orangery our kitchen may well have become much darker...frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

conservatory, no planning permission needed , shallower footings so cheaper and no need to get building services involved provided you leave the external doors between your main residence and the conservatory for insulation purposes, with an orangerie you need building services , deeper footings etc. which will ramp the price and timescale up0

Have you looked at doing your own conservatory? If you have a little DIY knowhow. I and my other half built ours, with a steel base. Middle terrace property with a manhole cover in the middle of where we wanted it. I have had professionals come and look at it and have commented how impressed they are, my neighbour had one added to his property after seeing ours, we were quoted 8-15 thousand and we built a 3-3 metre
Edwardian conservatory with base for less than 4 thousand all in. In less than a week. Added a room to the house !
Well worth looking at doing, we have had no issues with it at all.Making saving money part of my life.0 -

Make sure whichever you decide to go for, that you budget for underfloor heating as they are a nightmare to heat on rads in the winter. Ours is 6m x 4m and if the underfloor doesn't solve the heating issue, will replace with a solid roof construction. Lovely in spring and Autumn - very hot in summer and can be cold in winter.0
