Can someone help me with estimating a ROUGH cost?
Hi all,
I realise this question is a bit "how long is a piece of string" but we really would like just a very ROUGH estimate for cost of gas and electricity as we are about to buy our first home and are trying to budget.
We are a young couple and both work full time so will be out in the day most of the time. Three bedroom end of terrace house (on a meter) in Mid Sussex built in 1988 and fairly well insulated.
Or even if you just tell me how much you pay and what your living situation is that would be helpful.
Thank you.

A rough estimate is the national average £125 per month. Start going down from there - less if you pay by direct debit, less if you choose a cheaper tariff, less if you are well insulated, less if you take the heating off timed and only put on when you come home, less if you choose to make savings.
The string can be made as short as you like - but you should certainly very easily use less than £100 per month - but don't count on less than that until you start reading your meters and find out how much you really eat when you forget the hidden cameras are watching.
(This is just for gas and electricity.)0 -
Thank you, that's really helpful. I think we were HOPING for around £85, so this seems reasonable.0

£85 is perfectly feasible. At least you are moving in this time of year so you should have an idea of colder weather costs immediately (although (despite/because of) the wet it is still relatively warm). There should be a colder snap soon. And remember not to panic extrapolating winter heating costs over twelve months.0

Ok, that's a very good point. I suppose I was thinking of a fairly standard monthly cost, forgetting it will go up a fair old chunk in winter!0
