TFL Strikes question?

Funny how the press are mostly talking about job cuts though, isn't it? Even though it's really clear there may be changes, not cuts. Bob Crow was on BBCLondon earlier saying it's not about new technology "we're crying out for new technology": better be careful what you wish for Bob, the next big new technology will be driverless trains .....

Theyre talking about job cuts as there will be 750 - 950 posts made redundant, depending on whose figures you believe.

Bob Crow even admits to never using the ticket office anyway - always the machines.

And there are driverless trains in london..

"posts redundant" does not mean the same thing as "job cuts", unless the journalists are treating us all as idiots. Which is not unheard of.

I meant wholesale move to driverless trains on the tube, not just the DLR and the occasional non-passenger tube trial ...

They've already had 500 applicants for voluntary redundancy, with a further 500 enquiries. They never was going to be any compulsory redundancies, there are jobs there for people who want to be flexible. Before the changes are implemented in 2015 they will also lose a not inconsiderable number of staff to 'natural' loses, ie retirement, medical retirement, resignations and death.

The problem is that this striking thing is not happening for the first time so TFL had plenty of time to start recruiting new staff and training them. I know a train Driver and he has told me that it is easier to drive a train than a car so it wouldn't take them too long to train new people.
I also wouldn't be surprised if the majority of staff actually don't want to strike however are under pressure form the Union bosses.

Also it is not just the Drivers that strike but also overpaid Cashiers

Got to love this. So what are TFL meant to do with all of these newly trained staff should a strike not take place? Pay them wages for having nothing to do all day? Lay them off perhaps as it's always easy to accept this as an option as long as you are not the one being affected.

As for this person who you know being a train driver you can tell people that you know, (albeit only from this forum), another one now....me. And yes I agree that driving a train is easier than driving a car but it's when things go wrong, (which thankfully isn't all that often), that things get a lot harder.

Imagine if your car is involved in an accident which causes it to end up in the opposite carriageway. Is there even an outside chance that another car carrying potentially over 1000 people could come the other way and collide with it?

It's knowing what to do to try and prevent an emergency situation from becoming worse which is the hardest part of a train driver's job but few people look into this.

Back to the strike though I am not anything like a fan of Bob Crow and he is your typical run of the mill selfish union leader. However, without people like him we would all be working every hour god sends and earning enough money to live in a cardboard box.

you knew about the strikes and still decided that buying a travelcard was the most cost effective way for you.

TFL aint stupid when it comes to pricing. Its also why they don't give a toss if there's a strike because like the poster I too had to buy a weekly travelcard just like everyone I know.

TFL laughing all the way to the bank what with the wages they didn't have to pay

You had a bit of a delay on your journey, it has happened to us all at times, it is annoying.

Except this was a delay that wasn't through natural events such as adverse weather or technical difficulties. This was a strike! Hardly the same!
There are people in the south west who are not able to go home tonight, and have no idea what state their home will be in when they are next able to return. Keep your issue in perspective, your inconvenience is pretty trivial in the bigger scheme of things.

There are people in other countries dieing through malnutrition, people who have limited to no access to clean safe water, people that fear for their lives because they are possibly in a war zone or because they are homosexual or other reasons, people who have no homes .........

so based on your logic the people in the south-west should get some perspective because their suffering is trivial compared to some others!

Except, we are all individual and whether or not it's small or big in the grand scheme of things, we should be able to deal with. Otherwise, next time you dine out and the meal is cold i'm sure you won't mind not getting a refund or replacement because in the grand scheme of things it's not a biggie, or next time you get given the wrong item in a shop, next time someone scrapes your car you won't worry about reclaiming repair costs because some people aren't fortunate enough to be able to afford cars.

    Ye, get real!

Maybe because 5 new days of strikes have just been announced?
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
