Just been to vets to book X-ray for collie.hes been on tablets for a few weeks for what we think/ hope is arthritis in his shoulder
Worst case is bone cancer:sad::cry:
I'm scared now as there is not a good prognosis if cancer as I wouldn't put him through chemo at nearly 11 yrs old
Anyway hoping for arthritis, but could anyone give me a rough cost next week for ga,xrays as I will have to find cost before claiming back from insurance
I've asked him to knock the tarter of his bad tooth while he's under too

Best wishes it's nothing serious. My Rottie x went in for x-rays of her shoulder recently, suspected arthritis like yours (with the worry of bone cancer, the breed is very prone). It turned out to be a condition called bicipital tenosynovitis, basically tendonitis in the shoulder. We seem to have gotten away without surgery, rest and restricted exercise may have done the trick - I've got a doggy physiotherapist paying us a visit soon just to give their assessment of her movement.

I'm based in the South East/Great London(ish) so my costs may be more than others, but I've just checked the paperwork and my letter from the insurance company saying they were paying out the claim - the amount was £440, which included a month or so's worth of Metacam for her treatment too. If I rememer rightly, this was for 3 exposures, to make sure they could see clearly was it was. The sedation makes up a lot of that cost, so hopefully the tooth cleaning won't be too much extra as he'll already be anaesthetised.

    Thankyou
    Always think the worste
  • Just wanted to wish him all the best & will keep everything crossed

Re costs, you'd be best to ring your vet & get a price - prices can be £000s different in the same town, let alone around the country!
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!
  • I can't help with the prices, but as Rising from the Ashes has said your Vet should be able to give you an idea based on your dogs weight.
I hope all proves to be innocent, but may I suggest if your worst fears are realised, that you join a Facebook group called Tripawds.
They are owners of dogs who have had amputations due to injury and bone cancer and are a wealth of information.
Two friends have recently been down this road with their greyhounds, both of whom incidentally are 11 years old and one in particular faced opposition from her Vet. He wasn't familiar with chemo in dogs and believed it to be as hard going as it is in humans. My friends hound has coped really well with the chemo and her Vet has reassessed his opinion :)
Obviously it's not for everyone and is an expensive option, but I feel it's worth getting opinions and advice from those who've walked the path.
Keeping everything crossed that it's "only" arthritis and can be easily managed for a long while to come.

My little dog's x-rays were £400 2 years ago but it may depend on the size of the dog. I so hope that it is only arthritis. If it is please look at this site as vets very often give this medication (deramaxx) to treat arthritis.

All the best for your best friend and you X
