Divorce papers

We recently inquired about giving notice to get married and were informed as my H2B had been married before we needed a copy of his divorce papers, well that was 8-9 years ago and at the time he was in hospital undergoing cancer treatment and living at his place of work since the ex had the house so with no fixed abode he never received paperwork, his solicitors got in touch and told him where to be and when and that was that end of that, as she carried out the proceedings his solicitor doesn't have a copy of any paperwork or case numbers and we wouldn't even know how to look for her or where she might live to contact her for the case number, we've tried to ask family law who she used but they say everything has to be put into writing and even then they can't guarantee they can share any info, other than paying the court house the £40 they require to look up the case number which is an unexpected cost (along with the full birth certificate they need which cost us £12) is there anything else we can do? any help appreciated, if family law can't help we could really do with not having to fork out £40 for a bit of paper we don't even want.

If you can't afford £40 + £12 for the documentation necessary to establish the basic necessity before you get married, you need to be doing a bit more saving before you plan to marry!0

Our wedding is booked, most things paid off and we can afford to have it all paid if we continue to save and pay off the things we way we have been doing, what we can't afford is an unexpected £50 this month or next month on our current budget and if we leave it much longer than April we may not have the paperwork we need in the time we need it hence looking for an alternative before resorting to cut back on other things.0

But if you don't get this cleared up, and ensure that everything that needed to be done was done, then you might not be able to get married on the date you planned - this documentation needs to be shown to the Registrar before you marry.
No 1 son's marriage was all arranged ...until his wife to be realised that she had not applied for a decree absolute - and wasn't able to apply for it in time to present it before the wedding, which had to be postponed - with all the resulting costs involved.0 -
We've been in touch with the court, family law and a friend of his ex so there isn't much more we can do at present, if we have to pay the £40 for the paperwork then we shall do but we were just looking for a possibly cheaper option or way of finding the case number as the fee for the document is £5 and for finding the case number is £40 and had hoped there was another option clearly there isn't so we'll carry on with what we're doing but thank you for your replies.0

If he was born in either England or Wales then a copy birth certificate is slightly cheaper from the GRO

We've purchased the birth certificate, contacted his solicitor who swear they had nothing to do with the case, contacted the ex's solicitor who swear they had nothing to do with the case and then contacted the court who informed us since neither solicitor is willing to help or give us a case number it'll be a £75 fee, i'm now off to swear at my H2B for not dealing with this sooner
