Tenants with a dog.

Interesting thread. I suppose it matters how effectively the property can be cleaned when the tenants and dog vacate.
Any tips of the best way to clean carpets and generally remove doggy smells from a property after the dogs have moved out? Plus if you know of what to look for in choosing a hoover and steam mop for cleaning up after dogs I'd be interested to hear.
 Top tip - Surgical spirit.
I clean my carpets regularly with my vax. They are the best for this. Hoover - having experimented over the years, dyson ball is what I currently have and is by far the best. Suction is what you want to pull the dog hair out of the carpets. Steam mop - they're all much of a muchness. To really get rid of hair, use a stiff bristled brush and scrub at the carpet. Usually, it is dog hair embedded in the carpet that smells rather than the carpet itself. Get rid of the hair, get rid of the smell.
Don't use steam mops on carpets as they will 'set' the stain/smell.
I also use a grooming tool called a 'furminator' that strips out the undercoat of the dog, which is the hair that moults. This reduces the amount of hair shed in the house. I do this every week (but I do it outside as it pulls handfuls of fur out of them).
For cleaning stains in carpets, a solution of 10% biological washing powder to 90% warm water and scrub. Then a good spray of surgical spirit to remove odours. Getting to stains early means it's easier to clean.
For entire carpets that smell of dog, hoover and scrub to get rid of hair, clean entire carpet and give a good spray with surgical spirit. It will require some elbow grease!
With all my dogs, including puppies, I manage to keep my carpets from smelling of dog. However, I will say that they are only allowed in carpeted rooms when supervised, and I Hoover EVERY day! Sometimes twice!
Also, I regularly scrub and/or jet wash the part of the garden they use. This stops them trampling in unpleasant odours they have picked up on their feet. I use a bath mat rather than a door mat at the back door to absorb dirt and moisture from their feet as they come in. This is washed every day.
Their bedding is washed every 3-4 days. They are groomed by me every week then a professional groomer does them every 8 weeks.
It's all about keeping the dog clean and the hair at bay.
If I think of any other top tips I'll post them!0

from personal experience I would say if you can afford to then wait for another tenant without pets - you can clean carpets but how do you get rid of smells afterwards.
if above is not an option then definatley speak to previous landlord for references
The smell won't linger with shake and vac. :T0
