we can all look at bolt and draw an opinion of how it broke but unless your qualified metallurgist its just an opinion.

    Eh?

OP says the cam pulley bolt snapped and there is a suggestion this was overtightened.

Suggestions are not proof though. And it took over 12 months and 8000 miles before it snapped?

Have they tested the waterpump, Aircon, Alternator and anything else driven on that side of the engine?

Checked the Cam and crank bearings?

    Clutch and gearbox and diff?

The OP did state what exactly happened. ( The car just stopped and would not restart ) The attempting to restart the engine may have been the problem.

It may have suffered a mechanical issue.

Metallurgist is someone who specialises in studying and examining the physical and chemical behavior of metals and alloys.

It was a garage that told the original poster the bolt snapped due to "incorrectly adjusted or poorly fitted cambelt"

This is just the garage making an educated guess but it's not based on evidence.

A Metallurgist would need to examine the snapped bolt to determine the reason why it snapped. Their answer would be based on evidence

my first attack in a court would be is the person qualified and certified to state the bolt broke due to overtightening reason behind this would be to throw the whole report into doubt about its accuracy, we can all look at bolt and draw an opinion of how it broke but unless your qualified metallurgist its just an opinion.

Then my next attack would be my work is guaranteed for 12months OP is out of my warranty.
my next attack would be that the focus owner drives short distances, which increases stress on the engine, this factor could have resulted in the engine not heating upto temp and then cooling down repeatedly over a 8000 mile in 12month may have caused the issue.

I see a difficult case to bring forward in a court that's for sure.

Cambelt interval on most diesel Focus is pretty long.

150k on the 2.0d in my old V50

Short miles and such like makes no difference to a cambelt

The garage will have insurancd to cover such errors.

Anybody that thinks a cambelt or part of the work done changing the cambelt should go in 8k is wrong in my opinion.

They have eother done something wrong or charged for work they never carried out.

The cam belt is whole as far as I read it, its the fact the cam pully bolt to which maybe the garage could have touched during the belts fitment is the issue. The cam belt manufacturers warranty if 2 years for e.g will have the kit back, assess their parts and if found to be no fault theres no issue with their product to pay out on. you the turn to the garage who did the work who will instantly take the stance they did nothing wrong, producing a secondary engineers report at court stating bolt snapped "possible" over or under tightening is not enough you have to have the evidence to prove the case.

Even then it's just an opinion, but then expert witnesses are permitted to give an opinion.

It might be, if on the balance of probability that's what happened.

I know what a metallurgist is, I just wondered how the OP would own one.
