Sports space Hemel Hempstead

Evening,
I have had an ongoing dispute with a private parking firm at the local sports centre in Hemel Hempstead. I am a new user of this centre and was not aware of the parking procedures. I ply football on an adjoining part of the sports centre and I do not have to enter the centre itself. The lights in the car park in question were faulty and I did not see the signs saying what to do.
I have replied to the company explaining I was using the sports centre and that the lights were not working. They in turn have said it's still my fault and my headlights should lit up the signs. This is not possible as the signs are 6/7ft in the air and my headlights are printed to where the mot states.
I'd like to know where I stand with this as £60 is a big fine and £100 if I do not pay in 14 days. I have replied twice to the firm but they are standing strong.
Any help will be much appreciated.
