Depends how cold the outhouse gets in winter. The default frost 'stat setting is normally around 5C; few houses drop that low in winter inside, but an unheated outhouse could.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

  • So I'm guessing you swapped an old boiler with prob about 70% efficiency for a new boiler with 90%+ efficiency & your gas bills remained the same, ummmm I wonder why that is ? (see above)

No I swapped E7 electric storage heaters for gas Central heating! :p

Maybe my garage isn't that cold then as my boiler does not appear to be on constantly when it's cold/night time.
If my posts have random wrong words, please blame the damn autocorrect not me :D
  • check the meter reading when the timer has switched it off at night, then check again in the morn before it's due to switch on you may be surprised, of course you will need to pick a night when the temp has dropped below the frost stat setting
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Ok will do, here's hoping I don't get an unpleasant surprise!

We have a boiler in an outhouse. It's been there since the mid 70's with no problems, or frost stat. The comments about higher gas use are probably justified though. The the pipe runs are long. On the positive side, it can't be heard at all from anywhere in the house.

When it needs replacing, the new boiler will be inside the house.

Thanks again everyone. There is a possibility of putting it in my dining room - that would involve me boxing it in so that it doesn't look ugly, but guess that's not too big a job. I think that is the route I'm probably going to take. But I have two more guys coming round so lets see what they say.

    Cheers!

my folks have their boiler in an outhouse - whilst it might cost a bit more to run the frost setting over the winter, it also gives them an extra store where they can hang wet outdoors clothes/boots etc and get them dry. I would insulate your outhouse and then you've got a useful space and you don't have to listen to a boiler when you're eating your meals!

  • I've not heard of that before, as whenever I've moved house and ever needed a new boiler - it's always been fitted in the house. I suppose a boiler could go in the outhouse, but not sure I'd be happier with that myself.

Can you not get gas external boilers?
We have oil and ours is a proper external one, it is housed in an insulated cabinet. We had to have one, as there really was no where to put it in the house. It does come on occasionally in the night if its cold but never for very long. We don't use any more oil than other people I know with internal boilers so it can't use that much extra over night.

We had one in outhouse (it barely had a door on it)when i was in uni. Never had any problems with freezing etc. We did have massive fuel bills but it was big old Victorian house complete with old under-maintained sash windows.
