Amazon delivered to neighbour, now parcel lost

Hi,

I ordered an item from Amazon with super saver delivery. They delivered it to the next door building (a house converted into several flats). After days of knocking, the person who took the delivery said that they left it in the hallway for me to collect (this is true: I saw it through the letterbox!) but when it disappeared he assumed that I'd already collected it. He suspects that someone else in the flat might have taken it.

Is Amazon liable for not having delivered it to my address? I never gave them authorisation to deliver to neighbours I don't even know!

Many thanks in advance for your help,

Simon

While custardy and mike are right that Amazon are responsible, it's not actually them that screwed up the delivery, it's RM. I doubt very much if they said to the postie "if jet isn't in it's absolutely fine to leave it with the neighbour".

Most couriers leave a parcel with a neighbour as a default setting. Ive had several items that have ended up at a neighbour even when Ive asked them not to be left.

Its not always royal mail who deliver, Ive had parcels from DPD, my hermes and yodel when Ive ordered from amazon, all of those companies do leave with neighbours.

Yes I think amazon will replace the item if you havent received it. The royal mail tend to take an item back to the depot if you arent in, in my area they do anyway.

Double post due to MSE techincal issue. Deleted second post.
  • Hi, I emailed amazon and they refunded me within half an hour. Good customer service!

By the way, it was a courier service that delivered (or tried to deliver) the item. I'm not sure who Amazon use (it says Amazon on the card), but it's the second time they've done it even though it says don't deliver to neighbours in my preferences.

Royal Mail are generally excellent, and since I live 5 mins from a post office it's very easy to get hold of my items even if I'm not in.

If you can't guarantee to be available to receive a delivery try using the Collect+ service which will deliver to a local shop for you to collect at your convenience or the Amazon Locker if you have one nearby.

Good news. I mentioned RM because everything I get from Amazon is delivered by them, but that may be because of the cost of getting a courier to travel to where I live.

What technically constitutes a 'neighbour'? I've had a parcel left at a house that is across the road and, whilst our address is No 4 'The Road', theirs is No 28 'The Street'. They're not even technically on the same street as us, or have the same postcode, although their house is within a short distance.
