Can you put up a big sign at the door, saying

"Postmen/women & Delivery Drivers - Please DO NOT hand over post or parcels without proof of ID from the recipient"

    ???

As long as you can prove who you are...

    Aye,good luck with that one.

OP. What delivery points does you address have?
2 letterboxes into one(converted) building or is the building fully split?
Is collecting your mail a viable option?

a better option than a cheap gps tracker would be an old smartphone, probably cost about the same and much easier to prove stolen.
police are getting accustom to recovering stolen phones via tracking apps

    Do this (post it to yourself via Royal Mail) with a honkin' big sign inside which reads;

    "You've been rumbled!"
"C'mon, you KNOW this isn't your parcel ..."

Or something similar, depending on how you want to phrase it.

    That was my first thought.

My second was "I wonder what I could ostensibly send to myself that would instantly go into a colourful/evil-smelling cloud of something that would descend straight onto his thieving little head"....

I think there is stuff out there that will put a pretty indelible type dye on a thief in those sort of circumstances and you might find it would also make them feel more than a little ill too. With that...you've positively identified the culprit and dished out a little personal "punishment".
  • Talk to him, perhaps he's got them in a pile somewhere and he doesn't know who you are, or he's socially inept or something. If he's stealing from you he isn't going to be stupid enough to keep doing it if you approach him. Setting off an alarm in his flat would be fun, but probably isn't the easiest way to solve this.

Side note, are you able to order live wasps on the internet? Perhaps a box of strings will be a good deterrent.

Re he "isn't going to be stupid enough to keep doing it"....errrm...actually my experience of people I have identified as having thieved from me over the years is that they ARE incredibly stupid and/or incredibly self-destructive.

Yes....there really ARE people with incredibly low IQ's out there (damn it!) and yes there really ARE people out there (quite a few in fact I think) that will do things that will rebound back on them and harm them. Some people really DO want to hurt themselves at some level...yep...I cant understand it either...but they honestly do...

I would probably try and pick it up from somewhere - the sorting office maybe . Yes, it's a pain but at least you wouldn't have worries about your neighbours taking your post.

He isn't being carded though is he? The postie is delivering it, just through the wrong mailbox.

+ a lazy postie who doesn't want to post things through the correct mailbox will not read a sticker on a window.. Or think/read which flat number doesn't want their post etc.
  • Post yourself a turd or two.:o

And theres the solid evidence he wanted.

    A remote activated alarm?
    That'd be interesting.
I like this idea but I would modify it by using a wireless doorbell system (as these are designed to be loud). Send the chimer to yourself. First class after 3PM on Friday would almost guarantee it gets delivered on Monday but if any of the parcels that went missing were signed for use that so that you can track delivery. Before you do send it off though superglue the battery compartment (with fresh batteries in of course). If it gets delivered but not to you go down to ask him about it (with the doorbell in your pocket).

You: Hello have you seen a parcel for number xx? I was expecting one today
    Evildoer: No, nothing
You: Bother! I sent my wireless door chime off to be fixed. They said it would be back today.
    Evildoer: <blank expression>
You: I've got the doorbell bit right here look <press>
    <Bing-bong> <bing-bong> <bing-bong>
You: I think that's my door chime ....

Of course if nothing happens just stand outside everybody else's door and repeat until the culprit is revealed :)
