Supplying proof of identity

Hi, I'm new to all this forum stuff but here goes.
I recently came across some old files at home and found statements relating to a loan I took out with HFC Bank back in '95. I telephoned HSBC Bank to initiate a claim for mis-sold ppi and subsequently sent them copies of my statements (including a copy of the original application form, clearly showing a pre-printed tick in the ppi box!).
HSBC then wrote to me asking for proof of identity (passport, UK driving licence etc.) which I duly sent to them, signed "original seen" by a university teacher. They have now written saying that the document I sent was not correctly certified. What more can I do?
Are they deliberately trying to put me off? Surely, it can't be that difficult for them to verify that I am the person I say I am?
Oh, and they keep saying that I must supply a copy of my original letter of complaint despite me pointing out that the original complaint was made by phone. I really would appreciate someone replying. Thank you.

Was the passport correct certified? i.e. i certify that this is a copy taken from the original and that the photograph is a true likeness of Mr Joe Bloggs...Surely, it can't be that difficult for them to verify that I am the person I say I am?
Not if the passport copy was correctly certified.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

Did they ask for the documents to be verified? I recently had to provide proof of identity for a claim with First Direct for PPI taken out in the late 90's but they didn't mention anything about the photocopies being verified. I just copied my current passport and a recent utility bill, along with a copy of my passport from the time I took the loan out and a bill from this time. They accepted this so if you have your old passport and something to prove your address from the time it might be worth trying that?0 -
Hi I had a lot of trouble trying to prove who I was as I did not have a current passport and did not have a full driving licence. Is it possible to take your documents into a local hsbc instead of posting them.0
