There are clear cost benefits to the energy cartel for payment via DD. Imagine if they banned different charges for payment methods. Which customer in their right mind would pay via DD given the choice of either
a) Giving the energy cartel free unlimited access to their bank accounts, who will build up huge credit surpluses which takes several telephone calls and letters of complaint to recover with not benefit to the customer and a lot of hassle.
Or
b) The customer quite happily leaves their money in their own bank account earning interest until they get their bill once every 3-6 months and then pays for the bill without incurring any additional charges.0
