Cat D DO NOT require a VIC check.
  • Thanks a lot for your advice/comments. Thankfully, this is now resolved.

The HPI check was definitely clear of any adverse data.

After being in contact with Experian, they established that the write-off data showing in AutoCheck was NOT valid for our vehicle. They removed it immediately. It now no longer shows up in a search.

So a BIG fail on behalf of Experian AutoCheck then.

If anyone else has any issues like this in the future I guess the moral of the story is - the data may very well be wrong!!!

Even at consumer prices, a proper HPI is a fraction of the cost of most cars, so why do people bother with cheaper alternatives? Even HPI have data entry errors occasionally, so the Chinese whisper effect down the line of the "textawreck" ones surely make them more bother than they are worth.

From what I've read apparently Experian AutoCheck is less well known with consumers, but is used by some dealers. In this case, it was an official Renault dealership using it.

Experian are currently on a very hard sell to dealerships (it's cyclical, they all take their turn) and the dealership package (like HPI and the others) is packaged with POS materials as well as the finance package.
