HMRC Underpayment

I went BR in August 2010, discharged August 2011 and I have just received a letter from HMRC stating that I underpaid tax during the tax year 2010 - 2011 and are proposing to deduct the underpayment through my salary over the tax year.
It's not a huge amount but am I liable to pay for this as it was the year I went BR? I'm not trying to get out of it, but I lost out on a rebate previously because of my BR status so just trying to get my head round the technical details.
Thanks in advance

No, you are not liable for the tax for that tax year. Tell HMRC that they are not allowed to deduct this.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

If it's what I think it is, they have done this to other people over the past few years, and was easily sorted when they were informed of the error.
I'll try to find the threads later...Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks, I phoned HMRC last night and they have no knowledge of my BR and according to the lady i spoke to, they must now open an investigation.
Not quite sure what that's about but I suppose I'll just have to wait and seeFeb 2024:

Couple of examples from a quick search, and I know there are more somewhere that are more like your particular case.
They can "investigate" all they like. You are not liable.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
