HMRC underpayment

As one of a few million my wife received a letter in November/December stating that she owed the tax man over £1200 for the tax year 2008/09.
She was in shock, so I rang them and stated my wife had gone br in the November and that the shortfall had gone to Moonbeaver. The man at the HMRC stated that she should not have to pay as the money would go into the br anyway, but it would go for investigation.
Great news, the postman has just delivered a letter stating that there is nothing to pay as it falls into the br and apologies for the inconvenience.
We were pretty sure that she wouldn't have to pay, but at last now we have the confirmation.
So to all those out there who are in the same predicament, having had a letter stating you owed tax for the year you went br, hopefully your letter is on the way to confirm you have nothing to pay.

Well done on not panicing and just ringing and finding out the answer.
We have had a spate of these on the board over the last few months and all have had the same outcome. There appears to be a glitch in their system.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
I got it the over way round

Along with goodness how many others, I filed my tax return online last week, only to discover I had an overpayment of a few hundred pounds and asking me for my bank account details or nominated charity.
Now, I knew that any overpayment goes to the OR, not to me...but I didn't know the bank details of the Insolvency Service
Anyway, after waiting ages on the phone, I eventually got through to a very helpful, if rather stressed person at the revenue. She had a look at my details, said there was a note about my BR on my record, and to bypass the 'account information' screens (but even if I'd put any info in there, they would have ignored it as the overpayment goes to the OR).
I did say something like "sorry to bother you on a very busy day", she laughed and said at least it was an easy query. First time mentioning being BR has been met with the response of being 'an easy query' :rotfl:VSP Challenge 2014 #??? - £9.970
