Recommend any pet insurance providers?

Hi there, I have recently taken on another dog which now makes two. I am already with Petplan, but I find them very expensive (although they have never given me any problems when claiming for vet fees). However I have no experience of any other insurance.

So my question is can you recommend any other dog insurance providers. Have you had to make a claim with them and was it straight forward?

Many thanks

  • Hi morgwick,

Good idea to shop around - it's the only way you'll get the best deal. Looks like confused.com & gocompare.com both offer pet insurance comparisons so I would give these a try. PetPlan is effectively a brand name - it's actually owned by an insurance company called Allianz.

My dog was insured for 13 years with Tesco, it was about £10.00 per month for the first 10 years or so, and then it rose up to £30.00 for her last year. She had over 5k of treatment for one visit to the dentist for root canal work and two new knees.

Tesco paid up without quibble and very quickly, I wouldnt hesitate to recommend them.

Argos platinum is good. They paid out fairly quickly for me.
  • I have insured both my dogs with More Than. I have had to claim for both dogs this year and have found the claim process easy. However I would recommend you take out a policy with more cover than I did. I took out their basic plan thinking £3000 per condition would be enough but after my dog slipped a disc and had to have an operation I realise it is far from enough. For a few pounds more per month More Than have policies which offer much higher levels of cover.

    Hi
I'm with More Than for my three cats but I'd advise speaking to them because I got a decent multi pet discount.

Shop around on the comparison sites (also try Direct Line and Aviva).

    You can compare policies here

    http://www.defaqto.com/guides/insurance/pet-insurance-guide/

    http://www.which.co.uk/money/insurance/reviews-ns/pet-insurance/

Bear in mind that a new insurer will usually exclude any pre existing conditions and there may be a waiting period before you can claim.
