Google Chrome keeps trying to download suspicious file

I did something the other day - pressed a button I think but no idea what. And all of a sudden GC toolbar underneath the address bar was gone, my add-ons were turned off and all my login cookies gone as every website I went on I had to sign in again.
Even stranger is when I start GC up or during my session it tries to download 'turnoffprotectors.exe'. Avast notifies me of this and I choose to not allow the download.
I can't find anything on the net about this particular file.
Anyone know what happened and what on earth this file is?

Download FRST from the link below and save it to your Desktop.
LINK
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system - 32bit or 64bit.
- Right click frst.exe and choose "Run as administrator"
- Click Yes to disclaimer.
- Click the Scan button.
- It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (Desktop).
- The first time the tool is run it generates another log Addition.txt - also located in the same directory.
