clarks shoe problem

Options
Good Evening, I'm new to the forum, so Hello Watchers! Has anyone had a problem with the soles in particular styles of Clarks shoes over the last few years? My partner's have disintegrated in spite of only one wear - they have been boxed in dry storage but I have been advised that there is a chemical reaction called "hydrolosis" which has caused the soles to split & deteriorate whilst not worn!. I have asked advice from a shoe mender and shoe maker - neither can assist with repair. Clarks state that they will only refund a £10 voucher. I find this an insult as all have informed that this type of sole manufacture has been withdrawn. Surely Clarks must be held responsible here -is this not sale of faulty merchandise? Are we not entitled to new replacement shoes?

When did you buy them, when did they break, and when did you inform Clarks of the problem?

Note that the specific dates are more important than how many times the shoes were worn.

Also what type of shoes are they? If (for example) they were summer sandals, it may be possible to argue they arent fit for purpose as (imo although it may be tainted by the female shoe fanatic in me) some shoes should be fit for storage especially if they are - by design - the type of shoes likely to be stored for long periods at a time.

Unless there was a warning tag (I think some manufacturers do this but not all) saying they require wearing to ensure they keep well?

How much were the shoes? It could be argued £10 is a good offer.

You are certainly not entitled to a new pair as you will have to deduct any wear you have had.

I don't know what it is about Clarks at the moment...i purchased a pair of boots for £160 2 winters ago and yes i did give them a good trail run but i noticed the soles wore through, i have another pair that are about 4 years old from Clarks and their soles are still pretty good..maybe they have been having an issue with their manufacturers...was just going to see about getting them re-soled but alas one of the zips broke on me too...so the bin ended up with them.

I used to buy Clarks shoes, but they really started to go downhill properly about 5-6 years ago, so now I buy my shoes and my daughters shoes from the discount shoe retailers and the girls school shoes last longer than Clarks and cost 1/3 of the price (and fit better)
I payed $4.99 when I was in USA last April that I have worn at least 5 days a week just for work, but also I wear them then I go out and they are still going strong.
I'm just browned off that I have wasted so much money over the years on Clarks.
  • Thankyou, this link was really helpful. Am not sure if its worth pursuing with clarks now - have had no positive feedback re the firm any more. Shame - but spose everything has to change. They had their day.

    "hydrolosis" -what rubbish!

Just like the rubbish that they make shoes out of now days!

Clarks make crap shows now, its getting very hard to find decent shoes made out of real leather. Heck knows, we eat enough cows for the leather to be available.

You don't seem to be able to understand the problem so you persist on calling it 'rubbish' or 'rollocks'.
    From another thread:

And its a load of rollocks!

I have had shoes in the cuboard for years - never heard of that happening.

I do however know that the quality of clarks shoes has seriously declined over recent years, now they are just another retailer and not the high class shoes that they used to be (and still charge as if they are).

Just because you've not heard about it doesn't mean it's 'rollocks'.

I've had it happen to a couple of pairs of my shoes.
Not split soles but disintegrating soles.

I think it must be a certain sole composition.

It does happen - just not to you.

And it's not just Clarks shoes.

This problem has been reported about Hotter shoes too.

I bought a pair of Clarks' shoes a couple of weeks ago.
They have leather uppers and are leather lined.
