Pc --phone Data Cable Software

I have just upgraded my mobile to a Nokia 6230 camera phone,it came with Nokia PC Suite software so that I can transfer data to pc--however I needed a data cable tpe DKU-2--£29..99 on Nokia website.
I bought one on the net(new) from justphones at £6.89-a bargain, came nice box etc.
I have just tried to install the cable driver and I am being warned that it could be dangerous for my pc as the driver is "not designed for xp" and that I should stop the installation, which I have.
Is this a genuine advise from XP -perhaps I should have spend the 29.99?
Any advice appreciated.
Many thanks/St

That warning is normal for any driver that hasn't been certified by M$ (Microsoft). The catch is that having a driver certified by M$ would cost that company money (not sure how much). Is the cable an original nokia branded cable or a "compatible" one?

I also bought a "compatible" cable that had software that wasn't designed by xp and I had no problems.

If you used System Restore before installing the driver then you could restore your system to the way it was prior to installing the driver if there were problems.

If you click on Start menu and then on 'Run' and type the following in:

    C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui

The System Restore programme will then start, just select 'Create a Restore Point' and type a name for that restore point ('Before installing phone cable' would do), and finally click on 'Create'.

Or, alternatively if you can return that then order an original DKU-2 cable from BlueUnplugged.Com as they have the original DKU-2 cable for £6.45 (not sure how much p&p is though).

many thanks bbb,I will try your suggestion this afternoon with the restore point and see what happens--but you are probably correct re the MS "rip off" .
    I will let you know.

You don't really need to worry about this sort of thing; many perfectly good drivers are 'unsigned'. Unless the driver you're trying to install is meant for a different operating system, then chances are that nothing will go wrong.

Take a look at Microsoft's own blurb positing the 'benefits' of their quality control system; a short way down the page they even helpfully tell you how to turn it off!
