The bandwidth will never be available on freeview for HDTV. This is because there is not enough spectrum allocated by offcomm to enable it. The bandwidth that will be freed up when the analogue signals are turned off is basically going to be auctioned off to the mobile phone companies. Only a small section will be allocated to Freeview which will only really enable space for the main transmitters to be powered up some more and some space for smaller transmitters covering the areas not serviced by the main transmitters. While countries like Australia already have 3 HDTV stations free to view the only HDTV we will be able to get is through sky or cable - at a cost of course.
Yet again, missmanagement of the airwaves in this country by a bunch of backward thinking overpaid corporate foolsNudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -

Does it really matter if HDTV is broadcast via free view or not ? Will content not be distributed via the internet ? Legalities aside - HD content can be downloaded from the web already it can't be long before the corporates follow suit. The bbc are starting next month to distribute their content (not HD) over web etc
Freeview isn't actually free there is a cost - you have to pay your license fee for it !0 -

Assuming that everyone has high speed internet then your argument is the same for sky & cable. It does not matter. The only negative with internet TV is that for the provider the more viewers the more computing power & cost to supply the service. When transmitted over the airwaves the cost is the same no matter the viewers. Also if HDTV is the future you would expect that over time all TV will be in that format & current standards will be obsolete. The spectrum allocated for freeview would not allow HDTV for even the current channels to update to.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -

Distribution of media using a bit torrent method significantly reduces computing power & cost to the supplier.0 -

The same could be said for the web (UK based) distribution of tv you were talking about as well.
