Pocket-sprung mattress on slatted base?

I have read around about this online and the consensus seems to be that the 'you shouldn't put a pocket sprung mattress on a slatted base' rule is only really true if the slats are 3ins or more apart as that *might* allow springs to poke down unevenly.
I have forgotten how far apart the ones on my Warren Evans bed are (it hasn't arrived yet) - but I seem to remember the slats were wide and the gaps narrow. Warren Evans supply pocket sprung mattresses to go with all their slatted frames but they have 900-950 springs, and I have ordered an expensive 1400 spring mattress from elsewhere - which presumably means the springs are quite small.
Many commenters say it is all rubbish (a sales patter for divan bed sets), as good sprung mattresses have a layer of padding over the springs that won't allow it to happen.
Others say that it *can* and that the answer is to place some sort of thin padding between mattress and base, which will also add a degree of give and comfort (replicating slightly a sprung base).
BUT then the naysayers reckon that that will prevent crucial air circulation.
AND THEN the others say 'well what about platform divans, they don't have any gaps for aeration?'...
Any enlightenment on this?
Thanks.

Ikea beds are exactly that - pocket sprung mattresses (mostly) over slightly curved slats that are wide(ish) and narrowly spaced.
Seems to work fine.0 -
U can always get more slats from local timber yard. If u u getting king or superking bed make sure there is support in middle of bed and not just 4 corners.
We got our king bed from dreamsand it ionly had 4 legs at corner for support. I added middle support and more slats. Its much more comfortable now. Our other king bed is from argos. But it's low lying and with drawers. it had much better support.0
