I have a Sainsburys delivery pass and do all my grocery shopping online, apart from nipping into the greengrocers. I do save money because I am more focused on what I am buying. It's also great because you can sit there with your menu planner and your cookbooks around you and make sure you are buying whole meals. When I go to the supermarket I often pick up a bargain and then get home and realise I haven't got any of the other ingredients needed to make a meal from it!
  • I do most of my food shopping online, but the only option for us at the moment is Tesco, which I do not like using. I would prefer to drive into town (30 minutes each way!) and go to Morrisons (not be a big fan of Aldi or Lidl, as they do not stock everything on my list - I am on a mainly Paleo diet, with lots of juicing, and do not buy processed food). It is much nicer to pick out my own fruit and veg. Think I will try Tesco online only for the rest of February, and see if it does save us money. Still going to get meat from the local butcher though. Ali x

The few times I've bought fresh food online from Tesco, I've found that the quality of the produce leaves much to be desired. I think they send all the bruised and out of date stuff to online customers on the basis that you cant really argue when it is delivered and it is just too much hassle to send it back.

I get fresh produce delivered to my door via Riverford although Abel & Co also do a good job as far as I can tell. Their fresh fruit stays fresh for weeks and their veg is far better than anything I can get in the supermarket.

The secret to reducing your food bills, without doubt, is to meal plan and only buy what is on your list. I buy most of my stuff from Aldi, meat from Tesco and delicatessen and fish from Morrisons. I buy fresh produce from the markets if I want it but the boxes from Riverford usually suffice. Never look at eye level in the supermarket for whatever you are after because that is where they push the highest price goods. Get a white board and plan weeks in advance what meals you are going to cook and then only buy what is necessary. I dont have room to freeze milk, so I buy it as and when but we make bread and any other baked goods we need. I never buy them outright. When I shop, I buy flour, not bread, meat, not ready meals, rice by the 5Kg bag etc.
