How does Google Docs compare?

Options
How does Google docs compare to Open Office or Libre Office? I'm thinking in terms of functionality, and compatibility with MS Office documents. I know people are pointed in the direction of OO and LO, but some say they're not as good as MS Office. But nobody suggests Google Docs as an alternative.
I'm wondering because I'm thinking of going down the Linux road for my next computer instead of Windows, and so I'd need an alternative to MS Office, especially Excel.

G Docs is slower, has less features, less easy to use and is no where near as 'compatible', but you have access anywhere (with internet).

I use it, but personally much prefer Libre Office; OO is fine too.
Would you say that to a stranger's face in the street? No? Then why type it on a forum?

MS Office will install under WINE?
  • It depends what you need to do in Office and Excel. I use Google Docs a lot for work purposes and find it fantastic. It allows me to share documents very easily with my colleagues and offers everything I need. For the majority of standard functions then it works perfectly. If you are doing very advanced stuff in Excel then it may not offer all the tools you need. As for being slow, this depends entirely on your internet connection speed so bear that in mind (ie. try it out first!).

Google Docs is an Basic "On-Line" Word Processor, so internet connection is required and runs in your browser. Think you can get an off-line plugins for Chrome and Firefox browsers (not sure!). So if you have a dodgy internet or browser then stay clear of google docs

Saying that it is handy for the quick check or edit of a word doc if you're out and about and have a reasonable sized phone or tablet keyboard. ^_^

    Thanks.
I'm going to investigate Linux Wine, but I can see me just getting Windows and using MS Office and being a sheep. Apparently 8 works well with Classic Shell installed.
