Too party or not too party ?!?!? HELP

I have my partners 30th coming up and am undecided wether to throw him a suprise party or not. He's never had a party and doesn't have much family, when I ask him about it he says he would love a party but nobody would turn up.
I have made a list and had about 55 definite and around 40 possibles so I was thinking if I booked a small hall (the one close to us only holds 110 people) this could work.
However I am still undecided as I don't want the party to be a flop for them and don't want to waste my money but I do want to do something special and different as we have had a tough few years.
Any advice is appreciated!

I vote that you should party. Everyone should have at least one birthday party. And he has said that he would like one.
With that number of people, there is no reason why people should not have a good time.
Make sure there is some music - sometimes it may be necessary to play songs that people can do motions in (e.g. locomotion, macarena, etc) to get people on the dance floor.
A few bowls of snacks dotted around - perhaps in cold spot type areas where people might try to hide away, so that they are forced to socialise if they hover in these areas.
Stick photos of him through his growing up years on the walls - they will make a nice talking point.Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...
..one size fits all... and nobody minds if you give it back.☆.。.:*・° Housework is so much easier without the clutter ☆.。.:*・°SPC No. 5180 -
my vote is to party also, but would you not consider holding it in a local pub? for my son's 18th, we held it in the local, plenty of his friends turned up but there were also quite a few regulars, and the pub provided the music??Credit card €7892.36/€ 0

Party sounds good especially if it's a special birthday . One thing I did for my partners 30th was make a cd of everyone number 1 track that had been on his birthdays since he was born this also was used as a dance mix and mini game0

I'm voting party! I love birthday parties but I always worry that no one will turn up so my OH arranging one for me and sorting everything out as a surprise would be wonderful! Hope it's a success0

I vote party
Especially as he hasn't had one! I may look for a hall that was a bit smaller - if it holds 110 and you've got 40 coming, it may look a little sparse.
An adult party I went to recently - they pulled out modelling balloons then had a competition for who could make the best animal! It was so fun! You could leave out popping candy and rocket ballons - we had both of these in our wedding favours and they went down a treat (but most of our friends and family are big kids!)
If you go with the surprise - have you got someone who would be a good second-in-command? To corral the guests ready for when you two turn up.0 -
Definitely a party!! and a cake, definitely a cake....0
