Prepayment meter closing statement

Should I get a closing statement of account with prepayment meters?

BG are refusing to provide a closing statement after I moved out of a flat with prepayment meters, and unavoidably left a decent amount of credit on the meters.

They just said on the phone that they've closed the account (a few weeks before the moveout date that I gave them), and that's that, and that it was my fault for leaving credit on the meters.

  • Hi,

did you provide a final meter reading, if not then they have nothing to base the final statement on, if you did, then you should get a refund.
  • I've tried to give them a final reading - on the phone and by e-mail and writing. However, they can't accept it. They say the account is fully closed, and cannot accept a final reading and they cannot issue a statement.
  • Hi,

for a final reading you've got to give an actual meter reading in units, you can't just say 'I had £23.75 left', maybe that is the problem.
  • No. I've phoned them and written to them with the actual meter reading.

I've tried to give it to them over the phone, but they won't take it. They just say, it's a prepayment meter we don't need readings, or that the account is closed, and can't take any readings.

I've written, and they just either ignore it, or just reply to say that the account is closed, and I don't need to do anything.

Does seem odd - usually if you give them the reading on the day you move out, then they'll organise a refund/transfer to your new account.

If you don't give them the reading until later it can cause issues - but they should have explained why they couldn't help.
