I just had a person from the Council at the door asking me to fill in the electoral register. She said I had to until I said I didn't want to due to divorce. She then said it would be ok, "Ill put you down as refused."
I asked if there was a penalty for not doing so, she said they wouldn't do anything. I've since googled and people have been fined £1000 for not registering.
I've always registered and voted in the past, but I don't want certain people knowing where I live since my divorce.
If I sign the register but mark it as the edited version, will the likes of 192 still be able to obtain it? I won't be applying for credit but have read that private landlords refer to it as a credit check.

I've ticked the box for (edited - badly put - meant "not to be on") the edited version and my name doesn't appear on 192.
I don't know what the implications are for credit checks.0 -
I'm on the edited version and never have problems with finance applications etc. I've tried searching for myself on websites like 192 and I cant be found since 2005 and neither can my wife, we have moved home since then aswell.
Register on the edited version and you will be fine.0 -
I searched my name and it only appears in 2000, maybe I didn't X the edited box that year.I'm on the edited version and never have problems with finance applications etc. I've tried searching for myself on websites like 192 and I cant be found since 2005 and neither can my wife, we have moved home since then aswell.

I know it's easy to trace someone as I did to serve divorce papers. I only had the first part of the postcode, but the lady at the council office in another city was so helpful, I took her a gift.
(Police just been to my door about a car that had been scratched. I'm shaking LOL. Two Officers? I didn't know they cared about such things. Thought they'd come for me.)
That 192 site are such busybodies. Not only can you search for someone, but also find who has searched for you. I can opt out by writing, but there are many more like them.
I wonder if the threat of a £1000.00 fine is equal to the loss of revenue for each name not passed to junk mail merchants etc.
There are exemptions, but no mention of famous people. I wonder how they get exempted?0 -

Just to clarify, you tick the box so you are not on the edited register. Everyone appears on the full register which is used on polling day and can also be viewed at the council offices. The edited register is the one that the council sells to third parties like 192.com and direct mailing firms etc. If you don't want your details sold then you don't want to be on the edited register!Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
I accept what you say but edit means to cut, so how can the whole be less than the edit?browneyedbazzi wrote: »Just to clarify, you tick the box so you are not on the edited register. I'm going to ignore it for now. They know where I am and I'm hardly a threat to National Security.0 -

Yes, the edited one is the one that has some names edited (cut) from it. It will have fewer names than the full register. You tick the box to say you do not want to appear on the edited (shorter) register which is sold to third parties.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
Thanks but I hate the openness of the internet. Selling my details.browneyedbazzi wrote: »Yes, the edited one is the one that has some names edited (cut) from it. I don't do FB or Twitter, I 'm not traceable since 2000.
I have nothing to hide but my privacy.0 -
I removed my details from 192.com by using their C01.pdf form. Filled it out using free PDF editing software and emailed it back (cheaper than printing and posting). My details got removed the next day.
I always remember to remove myself from the edited register but somehow I was on it in 2008 and that year still appeared on their website.0 -
We tried to do that using the C01.pdf form, but you don't automatically "disappear".....your name may still pop up as a resident of an address from years back....take care.
PS and they got my age wrong by about 40 years! I'm quite happy with that though!0 -

I suppose you would need to fill the form in with your name for each address that you lived in since 2002 that still appear on the site.0
