How to fix Dell 948 Scanner which is stuck

I've had the printer copier scanner left in the garage for a few years & decided to start using it. Its been cold in there but not damp. The printer worked ok so I bought a few new cartridges for it. Then I tried the scan and it started but then got stuck. The eye light bulb scanner thing that goes up and down to scan is sticking in one place at the start so won't scan and says something along the lines of irrecoverable error. So now I can't get it off scanner or copier to just print! I don't use printers copiers scanners etc very much at all so I'd like to repair this now I've bought cartridges. Any ideas on where to start to take it apart and what I do to fix it? TIA.

I know it is wasteful, but do a search on ebay for sales within 5 miles for your house and I guarantee that within a week or two you will find a printer/scanner for under £10, often for 99p. They are worth very little generally and people do not want to post them.

As for disassembly/repair; I've taken 10's of these apart. Most of them you just need a phillips screwdriver to get virtually all mechanical parts out. Start with it upside down and get unscrewing!
