what is child support for and not for, should the one paying csa pay towards other things?
I am asking on behalf of a friend... she has asked her ex to help pay towards the cost of their sons football fees and towards a school trip that is costing £160 but has said no he already pays £30 a week, isn't that £30 a week to pay towards to living expense of the child like putting a roof over his head keeping him warm feeding him clothing him!, their son wants to play football which he is really good at but she cant afford it on her own and also cant afford a school trip at £160!! shouldn't he be helping pay towards them?

Child support is what the government tell you have to pay, anything else is discretionary, meaning, once he pays his support, hes not obligated to pay 1 penny more than that under law, the argument could be made that morally, its his child, so he should pay for extra's, but legally hes doing nothing wrong.0

The CSA set out the legal minimum to be paid to the PWC. Anything over and above this is a moral issue.
CM can be spent on anything from gas, electric, rent, fuel, after school clubs, school trips, uniform etc etc etc. The list is endless, we all know how expensive kids are.0 -

As others have mentioned, he is contributing towards them already.
Your friend may have to work extra hours or re-budget to allow those treats.0 -
Unfortunately he isn't obliged to pay for those.Although, you could argue that any decent parent would want to!If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0

Perhaps he wants to at £30/week he probably only earns £200/week, being a decent parent isn't about how much money you can sling at a child.
I pay a lot more than the OP is recieving and like the OP's friends ex, I wouldn't want to contribute anymore than 15%.0 -

In which case, it sounds as if neither parent can afford to pay for school trip and football fees. Perhaps both parents need to just accept that fact and explain it to their son, instead of pointing the finger at each other.0 -
The parent with care will also be claiming the child benefit and possibly tax credits.0

Talk to school - there are budgets that may be able to help.
+1 for being clear with child that money is finite & that is Just Life, not Mum or Dad's fault.0 -
We don't know the circumstances in this case, but if the NRP sees the child on a regular basis he will have costs associated with that. He may well provide a room for his son to stay over and have things at his house for the child. So he may already be providing for the child over and above what he pays in child support. If money is tight it may be very hard for him to make an ongoing commitment to pay for something like football training and an expensive school trip may be beyond his means.0
