Has anyone got any experience with this?

Any advice welcome I just don't know where to start really.

The one charity I want to approach I wanted to offer a percentage of profits rather then an upfront fee but its a big charity and I am small time...so didn't want to jump in and make assumptions.

With charities, I would do a discounted price - but still as I am just starting up so I wouldn't be charging just 'cost' for the item but I would want to charge for my time as well (like £6 an hour not directly but in the cost of the product)

I assume that would be acceptable?

*Sorry some charities I would sell my products with their design on, and others I would ask if they wanted to buy them direct and sell them.

The one I want to approach I would be selling them myself, but on say an item that sells for 99p, I make 40p...so I'd be only looking to give them about say 20% (20p?)

Charities are businesses, if you bring them money they will want to talk about how to go about it. They want to be sure you're not going to undermine their image, but will certainly welcome approaches if they look financially viable. There is no expectation for you to work for free.

They should be fairly amenable a mate set up contracts with 3 large charities for collecting rags.

Present it as a business model, and make the benefits crystal clear to the charity with your assumptions on numbers.

With all due respect, charities are charities full stop. They are not businesses and the day that they become businesses will be a sad day in my view.

But any charity which does not raise enough money to cover its costs is out of business. So we have to operate in a very calculating and business like manner in some areas while being all touchy feely in others.

With the exception of unincorporated associations (a few volunteers working together, having no legal status on itself), they're companies and have to report and behave as such. They have to balance the books. In prey much all respects they're businesses with some benefits in return for social value.
